The Ohio Wesleyan in Tanzania Program provides students with an intensive first hand experience of another culture by exposing them to the political, economic, and social realities of life in twenty-first century east Africa. Learning in Tanzania is meant to be experiential by providing students with the opportunity to do social research in a foreign work field setting. From the traveling and home-stay experience, students will learn a great deal about themselves and about their new country.
“Our experience in Tanzania so far has been so varied from all that we’ve seen and done to all that we still have yet to accomplish. It’s truly been an experience unlike any other! During our first week and a half in Arusha, we went on four safaris. We were able to see a wide range of animals in their natural habitats as well as the varied landscapes of northern Tanzania. After a stay in the ‘cooler’ parts of Tanzania our group moved on to Dar es Salaam—a metropolis of endless heat and countless cultural and economic aspects. While in Dar, our group will attend three classes concerning East African studies and work at various internships throughout the city. But our study aboard is not all work, our weekends will be spent going to local beaches and discovering more areas of the city. November will be an exciting month with trips to the beautiful island of Zanzibar and then a rural village stay in Iringa and the capital of Tanzania, Dodoma, to attend the Tanzanian Public Health Association Conference.” – Meagan Redding
