Bishop Way Peer Educators

The OWU This group of highly trained students are passionate about empowering their peers to find balance in their wellness and promote wellness initiatives on campus. The peer education program focuses on the 5 dimensions of wellness, supports others in responsible decision making and role-models the Bishop Way to encourage campus-wide change for wellness and prevention.

The Bishop Way is launching its pilot peer education program and looking to recruit our first cohort of student leaders for spring 2023! No experience is necessary; all students selected will receive training. We are looking for students interested in advancing wellness for the OWU community! Application Timeline

  • November 7: Applications Open
  • November 30: Application Closes 
  • Week of December 5: Interviews
  • Week of December 12: Candidates are notified 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Commit to at least 2 semesters as a Bishop Way Peer Educator 
  • Commit to at least 3 hours/week during academic semesters 
  • 2.5 GPA
  • Must be in good standing with the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate prevention education workshops
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute Bishop Way signature programs
  • Create social norming marketing and other Bishop Way advertising materials to educate and inform the OWU community about Bishop Way programs and resources 
  • Attend various training sessions to gain knowledge to share with OWU community (Mental Health First Aid, QPR, CHOICES, One Love, etc.)

Expectations 

  • Facilitate 2 presentations each semester
  • Commit to at least 3 hours/week during academic semesters 
  • Show up on time and prepared to participate in programs, presentations, and meetings 
  • Represent the Bishop Way program in a professional and enthusiastic way 
  • Take initiative to research and further improve skills and knowledge related to prevention education on college campuses
  • Volunteer for Bishop Way events
  • Assist in formal and informal ways to advertise upcoming events and programs

  • Participate in additional professional development  opportunities (special workshops with career services, Strengths, etc.)
  • Gain knowledge on a variety of health topics relevant to college students, which may include mental health, sleep, substance use, healthy sexuality, hazing, etc.
  • Gain transferable skills and experiences to utilize in future employment opportunities. It includes the following but is not limited to:

  • Experience for related majors, career fields, and/or graduate programs: Public Health, Social Work, Human & Health Services, Education/ Health Education, Sociology, Psychology, Communication, Health and Human Kinetics, Social Media & Marketing, Health Promotion, Social Justice, Women and Gender Studies, Pre-Health, and more!
