WHO ARE EXTERNSHIP HOSTS?
Externship hosts are engaged OWU alumni, parents, and community partners who seek to help students with their career exploration and development.
WANT TO BE INVOLVED?
- Prepare
- Choose dates that best work for you and your organization. Please note spring dates can be flexible in length if needed:
- Fall 2019 Cohort Program: October 9-11, 2019 in Washington DC
- Spring 2020: March 9-13, 2020 (various locations)
- Review host requirements for participation
- Check with Management / Human Resources (get clearance if needed)
- Complete an Externship Host Form
- Identify specific and significant experiences
Please ensure the opportunity offered provides a structured experience for the student through mentoring, job shadowing, and/or handling different project responsibilities.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
- Contact: Career Connection will contact you to discuss your proposed externship.
- Review student applications: Externships will be posted for students to review on the Career Connection website. Interested students will submit their applications to Career Connection and can apply for up to 3 externships (while providing their ranking preference). Career Connection will review applications, student preferences, and pre-screen candidates.
- Select: Hosts will review student applications. Hosts may choose to Skype or speak on the phone with the student applicants before indicating their selected applicants. Hosts must notify Career Connection of their candidate selection and Career Connection will offer the externship opportunity to the student(s).
- Connect: Once a match is made, the host and the student(s) will be put in contact with one another to discuss goals for the externship, the logistical details, office hours, appropriate dress, etc.
Note: Students are responsible for covering their own transportation and housing fees, but can apply for a competitive stipend to assist with travel expenses.
