The British began building Jamestown in the 1600s, making it the best place to learn about Accra's colonial history. Even though government officials have neglected the town, the community has converted several colonial building ruins to serve their needs.
The major buildings in Jamestown are the old lighthouse and Fort James. Fort James was originally a trading port but soon became an auction site to buy enslaved Africans. After the abolishment of slavery, the fort became a prison. The government recently closed the prison in 2008.
